NativX's Battle of the Brews: Which Philly Brewery was crowned top brewery in Philadelphia?

Sheeeesshhhhhh! What an event! Battle of the Brews presented by NativX put 6 of the top breweries in Philly head to head to decide who takes the cake for the top brewery in Philly. These were the brewery finalists submitted by our expert craft beer and brewery Natives. Six breweries, 14 craft beers, one champion. You voted and here's how the night went down.

Meet the Philly brewery finalists

Evil Genius

@PhillyBeerCam: "Stepping into Evil Genius is like a throwback to the 90s. They have board games we've all played as kids and their food menus are displayed on VHS cases!
Evil Genius is a great place to hang out with a group of friends  - During the warmer months, they have outdoor seating! Everyone loves drinking a good beer in the sunshine."

Kurant Brew and Brew

Known for ciders, they are making a transition to brew ciders, beer, and coffee!

@BrendenColeman33“This is a new brewery that specializes in ciders. Located in Fishtown, it’s a great change of pace for brewery fans – and also a great compromise if you have a few members of your crew who aren’t beer fans. They serve quality craft ciders that aren’t like the sugary mainstream ciders.”

Love City Brewing

@PhillyBeerCam“Love City Brewing is a warehouse on a tiny street a couple blocks off of Spring Garden...They have the whole beer drinking crowd covered from classic Pilsners to the trendy New England IPAs! Cheers!”

Roy Pitz

@PhillyBeerCam: "Roy Pitz converted a warehouse on Spring Garden into their barrel house. Inside features art from different local artists on the walls and barrels. They have elevated bar food that goes great with a $3 happy hour pint!”

Dock Street

@BrendenColeman33: "Known as the OG brewery in Philly, Dock Street has a coffee shop vibe that really makes it a unique. It’s not just a place to grab a beer, they think outside the box by converting it into anything from a tattoo parlor to a comedy club. They also have killer craft cocktails and draft wine so everyone can be satisfied.

Pro tip: talk to the bartenders about the secret cocktail menu"

Urban Village Brewing Co.

@PhillyBeerCam: "Urban Village is an awesome neighborhood brewpub at the Piazza in Northern Liberties with brick oven pizzas and about a dozen drafts. They have a great happy hour at 5-7 that includes $3 for all draft beer and 1/2 off pizza! They nail every style of beer!"

Meet the NativX Philly Beer Natives

Just your average guy that loves trying new and delicious beers. Cheers 🍻😊

The beers from the breweries

#adulting is our Guava-infused IPA! Pale and crystal malts marry perfectly with Citra & Cascade hops, creating an easy drinking, creamy, medium-bodied, clean, smooth IPA. It is then infused with all-natural guava, turning this already delicious IPA into something truly unique. Big, bold hop notes of tropical fruit, watermelon, and lemon, balanced perfectly by a slightly sweet malt backbone and juicy, refreshing guava.

Purple Monkey Dishwasher

Purple Monkey Dishwasher is our robust porter made with Chocolate and Peanut Butter. We start with a world-class American-style porter recipe, which is already laden with notes of chocolate, sweet malts, caramel, and molasses, and then take it to the NEXT LEVEL by infusing it with natural chocolate and peanut butter! The final product is like a candy bar in a bottle that is deceptively quaffable despite it’s strength. Just take one sip and you’ll understand why this is our signature, year round porter.

Bees is an off-dry cider sweetened with locally sourced, responsibly harvested honey.  The addition of honey adds just a touch of sweetness.  The honey comes through in the nose of the cider and continues all the way through to the finish.  On top of the white wine like qualities of the cider, the honey adds a light floral character creating depth.  If you like off-dry, German white wines you will want to try Bees.  Available in 12oz cans in cases or 4 packs at local retailers.

We take a crisp blend of fermented apple juice and dry hop it just before packaging using 100% Mosaic hops sourced from the western United States.  The Mosaic hops add a light citrus and melon character on top of the crisp notes found in the juice blend.  The hop character is light and not overpowering.  By using a dry hopping technique, only the hop flavor and aromas are infused into the cider.  Don't be afraid to try Earth even if you aren't usually a hop head. Available in 12oz cans in cases or 4 packs at local retailers.

Eraserhood – North East IPA

Style: Hazy IPA; New England IPA

ABV: 7.2%

Flavor: Round & smooth; moderate malt

It’s triple dry-hopped! It goes through a “hop stand” to extract even more flavor!

Best Blond

Golden Straw in color, our German Style Blonde Lager is brewed with all German ingredients. This lager boasts a generous portion of Pilsner malt blended with small amounts of crystal malts providing an authentic German aroma and taste. Noble German hops, cold fermentations, and the soft water used is similar to the water in Cologne, Germany and provides a perfect background and finish to the beer.

4 The Win: A Giant Killer NE IPA

A beer for a giant killer. This hazy NEIPA is made with the finest Marris Otter malt and lactose. Simcoe, mosaic and galaxy blend in the two dry hops to make this kick out a ton of hop aroma and flavor.

The inspiration for the name has a pretty great story too.

Gobbler Lager

This German Lager is made with 9 different specialty malts including caramel/chocolate/and toasted malts to give it an authentic hearty dark amber lager taste and is than scattered with German Floral hops that balance the malty sweetness. The yeast enhances the maltiness of the brew and the extended cold conditioning time makes this bier smooth and drinkable as ever. A flavorful German lager that makes for the perfect turkey beer! Gobble, Gobble!

Step Your Game Up

Step Your Game Up is a New England IPA style beer with some badass can art. Pungent and juicy tropical fruit aroma permeates the nose. Juicy red grapefruit, nectarine, and papaya dominate.

american style ipa

The Golden IPA

American IPA - We designed this golden-hued, clear IPA so that hop flavor and aroma are the primary experience. Oats and a touch of caramel malt make for a mouth coating light body balanced with medium bitterness. Mosaic, Citra, Simcoe, and Amarillo hops create flavors and aromas of tropical fruit, citrus, and just a hint of pine.

winter haze

Winter Haze

This wintery version of our seasonal Pale Ale showases spelt and wheat malt, orange peel, and an abundance of Simcoe hop additions. Pairs with Art Museum step sledding, backyard fires, and shoveling snow.

rye bread

Rye Bread

Drinks just as you would imagine drinking rye bread would be. hops, rye malt, and caraway come together perfectly in this unique and delicious IPA.

i am brut

I AM Brut

This is a bone dry ipa with no residual sugars. With big hop flavors and aromas of grapefruit, this truly is the champagne of ipa’s!

Black, opaque, off-white head. pleasant mild dark chocolate aroma, with a bit of mild roast. slightly sweet flavor, body is fuller and nice mouthfeel.

Everyone at the Battle of the Brews was given two "chips" to chose their two favorite breweries. They were able to taste free samples for each of the breweries and then mingle with others.

Between sips, they...

And The Battle of the Brews Champion is...

In an unbelievably close vote with only nine votes separating first and third place, the Battle of the Brews Champion is...

Often referred to as the Craft Beer's Younger Sibling (alright, we might have just made that up), the Ciders took it to traditional beers last week! From its Earth Cider brewed with Hops or the extremely refreshing taste of Bees, everyone at the event was raving about Kurant!

Relatively the newcomer in the Philly beer scene, Kurant has big plans. They recently announced that they will be a coffee shop by day, brewery by night. It's the combo we've been looking for!

Evil Genius is notorious for their crazy and hilarious names. So notorious that they actually have a Beer Name Hall of Fame. I mean, the two beers they had were called #adulting and Purple Monkey Dishwasher... Word on the street is they're releasing some new beers with bizarre names.

Sign up to be alerted when we release the interview with Kurant!

Far and away, the talk was that Roy Pitz's can art was EPIC. Just look a the detail on Step Your Game up. The stunner shades mixed with that lip sweater is second to none.

Honorable Mention: Urban Village -  we heard plenty of comments about how cool Urban Village's can art was with Oatis being one of the favorites!
